Inspected the passenger side window on the BMW, today. It will power down but wont go back up without assistance. I lubed the regulator to see if that would help but it didn’t. The motor has a place to accept a hex bit to facilitate rolling the window manually, I’ve managed to completely strip that out. I didn’t bother removing the motor as it is a pain in the ass. priced out new regulator and motor; $900 for the reg and a motor for an ‘86 wasn’t available but the motor for ‘88 and newer is $400. So I’m gonna leave it, it’s now a problem for the next owner.
also checked to see my why the front speakers wern’t working. I unpluged the right side to check for voltage at the wires, but when I turned the head unit on the front dricver side was playing music. so I plugged the speaker back in and it worked aswell but both fronts were much quieter then the
rears. I replaced all 4 speakers with new P
ioneers, it now work good.
Previous owners janky wiring
Sticker off the old speakers

Looks like BMW equipped all ‘84 and ‘85 3 series with heated nozzles, and after that they were bundled into the cold climate and comfort packages - heated seats and mirrors included as well, which my car doesn’t have. My ‘86 was produced in 10/1985 so maybe it was that explains why it has heated nozzles. The way BMW wired these up was to daisy chain them to the washer pump, so if the pump is running the heaters are on.
I thought it odd that I didn’t have any wires coming out of my hood, so I looked and found this cut wire. That cut wire goes to T-connector with 1 plug being the same type as what is plugged into the pump.

I also wrenched on an E30 today. Helped a friend swap rear calipers; the right rear was sticking or something and smoking pretty bad.

Griiiiiiiind. Grind. Griiiiiiind.
Pro tip: keep a pair of needle nose vice grips in the bmw, in the event a passenger manages to roll the window all the way down before you can stop them. You can grip the exposed 1/4" of glass without damaging it and give a pull upwards while toggling the switch.

Wierd how oiling the window did not help. In my not BMW the scissor mechanism was binding and WD40 fixed it.

This is not a scissor, this system uses cables and pulleys to lift the window up the track. Apparently BMW switched to a scissor system on the ‘88 and newer E30s. Different motor, different regulator.
